performing on period instruments

Our quartet was born out of a shared desire to explore the great chamber music repertoire of the 18th and 19th centuries, with Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven as the most outstanding exponents, with a historically informed view.
We use copies of original instruments, historical strings and bows, autograph scores or first editions wherever possible. Truly important for our Quartet is the work of the Toro Stringmaker who, in a small Abruzzi village called Salle, has a craftsmanship of excellence that the whole world envies us. For generations, the Toro family has continued its activity of creating gut strings that, today as then, are distinguished by their excellent sound quality and remarkable resistance.
We pay special attention to minor composers and unpublished or recently rediscovered scores.
In fact, in November 2020, the Urania Records record label released our Integrale dei Quartetti by the Como composer Francesco Pasquale Ricci as a world première.
Our musical journey led us to want to pay homage to the great composer Johann Sebastian Bach, with the reference in the very name of our quartet to his keyboard composition 'Aria Variata Alla Maniera Italiana' in A minor BWV 989.

For the realisation of concerts and recordings we make use of the material in the archives of prestigious international music and musicological research organisations and institutions such as L'Archivio della Sinfonia Milanese and the Centro di Ricerche Musicali

Upon specific artistic request, we can also become an "Ensemble Alla Maniera Italiana" as has already happened, for example, when we have been asked for concert programmes in string trio or requiring two violins, cello, harpsichord and soprano.

In 2020/2021, years in which the possibility of performing our quartet concert activity was reduced to an all-time low by the pandemic, Giacomo and Anna recorded and published precisely as 'Ensemble Alla Maniera Italiana' the Integrale dei Duo for violin and cello by F. Zappa, again for Urania Records.

We are based in Como and are included in the network of Le Dimore del Quartetto.
